The Giggling Squid Thai Restaurant, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk

This week Steve and I met up with friends in Bury St. Edmunds and enjoyed lunch at the popular and super-stylish Giggling Squid Thai Restaurant, which is one of their favourites. Part of a small chain (there are 16 in the group) which opened it’s first branch in Brighton in 2002, I’m not surprised this classy brand has gone from strength to strength with it’s simple, rustic, and fresh Thai food. First of all this quirky, family-friendly eatery gets my award for the best restaurant name ever, and the food itself was both delicious and authentic.2016-11-19-14-28-33-1

I loved everything about the interior décor, – especially the laden bookshelves on the back wall of the atrium

The Giggling Squid’s Tapas lunch menu is what makes this brand unique. We all chose the Two Dish Meal Combi which was superb value, and it gave us a great selection of main courses and sides to share…

The only problem was we needed a larger table to accommodate the drinks and all the dishes!

For nibbles – we shared spicy Prawn Crackers with Thai Sweet Chilli dipping sauce

One of the excellent value Two dish meal Combi choices – Cashew Nut Vegetarian Stir Fry which came with rice, and a side of Spring Rolls

I was particularly impressed with the aesthetically pleasing presentation of the dishes….

2016-11-19 14.58.26 (2).jpgMy Thai Green Curry tasted as good as it smelt – with a creamy consistency among the crunchy mix of courgettes, broccoli, green beans and peppers, with just enough kick of spice! Another fab Combi meal – it was served with rice and I chose Mixed Vegetable Tempura as a side dish.

We chose Chicken Satay for one of our side dishes

We drank Chang beer, a premium lager imported from Thailand with a sparkling gold appearance and a smooth, crisp taste, which complemented the food perfectly.

Only one of us had room for a dessert – Caramelised Mango Cake, served with Vanilla ice cream

We ended our meal with Fresh Mint Tea

It was a lovely meal with friendly and efficient service, in delightful surroundings. We paid £20 a head including drinks, so The Giggling Squid is excellent value for money too. As it came well recommended by our friends, I had high expectations but I was very impressed. Only one minor quibble – we should have chosen to have the side dishes served as a starter rather than the whole meal coming at once, but we will know better next time!2016-11-19-14-31-45img_20161119_1509508-1img_20161119_1509337
